The Mercedes-Benz W196 R was designed by Rudolf Uhlenhaut and Fritz
Nallinger. Because of its streamlined shape, it was able to reach high
speeds. The W196 R was built fourteen times, including the prototype.
From the European Grand Prix on the Nürburgring, a version with free-standing wheels was switched to, which is also known as a
monoposto. On a technical level, the vehicle was manufactured with the
highest quality at the time and had, for example, a tubular space frame,
a torsion bar suspension, an articulated swing axle and turbo-cooled
duplex drum brakes. The 290 hp vehicles were driven by Juan Manuel
Fangio and Stirling Moss. In the twelve Grand Prix races, the two were able to achieve nine wins from twelve Grand Prix races.
