Equipped with Christie suspension with large diameter rolling wheels, the Crusader possessed remarkable driving skills on rough terrain. The first versions of Mk. I and Mk. II were armed with a 2 pdr cannon. later replaced by the more powerful 6 pdr cannon. in the Mk.III version. Article number: 510006198 Product: 1:72 Montecassino'44 GUSTAV Line Battle During the Italian campaign, in the period from January to May 1944, the allied forces under the command of General Mark Clark, advanced upon the German 10th Army commanded by General Heinrich von Vietinghoff, who were entrenched in defensive positions along the Gustav line. The cornerstone of the Gustav line was the small town of Cassino which controlled the river Liri valley. Cassino itself was dominated by the historic Benedictine abbey of Montecassino, which was an important strategic observation and defensive position of the German forces. The determined resistance offered by the German troops, who held their positions for almost four months, was assisted by the difficult weather conditions, which hindered the allied advance. Fierce fighting ensued to try and oust the Germans from their stubbornly held defensive line. During this operation the town of Bastogne and its surroundings where encircled by the German troops. Inside the pocket around 15.000 American soldiers stood up to the repeated assaults of the German army for approximately ten days. The legendary resistance was that of the US 101st Airborne division inside the town. On December 22nd the General von Lüttwitz , who was the German commander, submitted a demand for surrender to the encircled units. The answer of the American commander in Bastogne, Brigadier General Anthony McAuliffe was "NUTS". Then, Germans renew their attacks trying to occupy the city but without getting results. On December 26th some soldiers of the General George Patton’s Third Army reached the besieged troops, breaking the siege and evacuating the wounded. The division of the British "Frankforce" used two regiments of Matilda tanks, heavily armored for those days, as backbone of the offensive during the battle. However, the Allied offensive was shattered against the determined resistance of the 7th Panzer Division, commanded by General Erwin Rommel, which, despite the suffered losses, strongly kept the position. Rommel, as German anti-tank guns were ineffective, used field Artillery and "flak" guns to knock out the British tanks. The French colonial policy of the XIX century was based on a progressive expansion in the North African and Sub-Saharan territories. At the end of the nineteenth century the Tuaregs opposed a fierce resistance to the French troops for the defense of their Central Saharan homeland. A lot of violent military clashes between the French Foreign Legion troops and the Tuareg Berber troops took place especially in the most remote areas of the Algerian territories were several outposts and forts were built by the French. However, the local populations could not compete against the more advanced weapons of French Army. The fighting ended with the signatures of the 1905 and 1917 treaties. The troops of the Axis in a few months took back Cyrenaica and Tobruk, and advanced into Egypt. Constantly short on supplies, they were defeated by the 8th British Army at El Alamein. The additional pressure caused by the American arrival in Morocco forced the Afrika Korps to gradually retreat in Tunisia during 1943.
