Later, Ferdinand Porsche developed an amphibian version of this car, called the Schwimmwagen. The light weight of this vehicle (about 1/2 ton) permitted crossing of muddy areas, since only two men were sufficient to keep this vehicle moving. For reconnaissance and liaison missions, water had to be crossed frequently, which was impossible with other vehicles.

The design was simple and straightforward yet extremely rational. The large front loading ramp allowed for the rapid disembarkation of a fully armed infantry squad as well as a 30-ton medium Sherman tank. The armor was very light, protecting the diesel engine, which enabled the LCM to reach a maximum speed of 8 knots, and the crew required for navigation and close defense, consisting of four men. After the end of the Second World War the LCVP stayed in service, occupying a number of roles. It saw action in Korea and Indochina and has also been adapted for civilian use all over the world. Composite armour plates made of polycarbonate were also added and which significantly increased the protection and resistance from enemy hits.

The L.V.T. tracked vehicles (an acronym for Landing Vehicle Tracked) were developed to equip the United States armed forces, including the Army and the Marine Corps, with a suitable vehicle for amphibious operations capable of providing a good level of protection. Often known as "Amtrac," they were widely used in the Pacific theater against Japanese forces, as well as in the European theater during the last year of the war. The LVT-4, in particular, represented a significant improvement over previous versions. With the redesign, the engine was relocated to a central position, freeing up the rear of the vehicle for the addition of a ramp that allowed for the rapid loading and unloading of light vehicles or small-caliber artillery pieces to support landing troops. Whilst great attention was paid to ammunition and artillery trailers, one outcome of this modernization project was the development of the 155/23 howitzer. It was first produced in 1942 as a medium artillery piece and served the US Army throughout the Second World War. It could use different types of ammunition and had a maximum range of 14,600 meters. Very robust and reliable, it also proved to have good operational longevity. They were built on the hulls of existing armored vehicles, removing the main armament and the turret and installing of specific equipment for the recovery or repair of armoured fighting vehicles damaged in battle. The American M-32 ARV was based on the chassis of the well-known Sherman A-4 medium tank and it was used by U.S. Army in the European Theater of Operations during the Second World War. It was characterized by the superstructure that permitted to lift and to trail the damaged tanks. Furthermore on M-32 a wide set of repairing tools and spare parts were loaded on board emphasizing its role of real "mobile armoured workshop" capable of operating on the front line. The M-32 was even able to perform complex operation as the replacing of the tank engine.
