Within the overall strategic planning of the acclaimed operation "Overlord", the code name for the Allied landings on the beaches of Normandy, the French village of Sainte-Mère-Église played a key role. On battle plan maps it was rightly identified as an important road junction that the defending Germans could have used to carry out rapid counter attacks directed towards the Utah and Omaha beacheads. It was therefore strategically imortant to attack and quickly occupy the village with American airborne troops to support the landings. In the early hours of June 6, 1944, paratroopers of the famous 82nd and 101st US Airborne Divisions secured the small French town following a period of intense fighting. The PaK 97/38 was a German anti-tank gun used during World War II. It was developed using the barrel of the famous French 75 mm Mle 1897 gun. Many of these guns were captured after the invasion of France and proved to be a valid, quick, and relatively inexpensive solution to equip German anti-tank troops with a more powerful weapon than the now outdated 37 mm PaK 36, which was no longer capable of penetrating the armor of more modern and robust Soviet tanks such as the KV-1 and the T-34. It could fire a decent variety of ammunition types and was also used by numerous anti-tank units of other Axis countries allied with Germany. The battles of Ligny and Quatre Bras were only the proem of the most famous and well-known battle of the military history. A date and a place: 18th June 1815, Waterloo. Wellington considered the farm of La Haie Sainte a strategic point of his defensive line. In the afternoon, Napoleon ordered to Marshal Ney to launch the assault to the farm in order to obtain a significant outpost. The farm was strenuously defended by Allied troops, that had fortified the buildings since the morning. The clash was fierce and the French troops, supported by artillery, were able to conquer La Haie Sainte only in the late afternoon. At 7 p.m., thanks to the strategic value of the farm, the French Imperial Guard can start the assault but it is too late. The cornerstone of the Gustav line was the small town of Cassino which controlled the river Liri valley. Cassino itself was dominated by the historic Benedictine abbey of Montecassino, which was an important strategic observation and defensive position of the German forces. The determined resistance offered by the German troops, who held their positions for almost four months, was assisted by the difficult weather conditions, which hindered the allied advance. Fierce fighting ensued to try and oust the Germans from their stubbornly held defensive line. The Panzerkampfwagen V "Panther" is widely recognised as one of the best tanks that was produced during World War 2. It was deployed as a direct response to the Soviet T-34 and KV-1 tanks on the Eastern Front, which were superior to both the Panzer III and Panzer IV in terms of performance and armaments. Powered by a 700 horsepower V-12 Mayback engine, it was armed with the 75 mm KwK 42 high speed gun which was a very effective anti-tank weapon. In fact, Germany stepped in after Italy’s failed invasion kicked off the preceding October. Greece had repelled that initial invasion and had even counterattacked by March 1941. Consequently, on 6 April, 680,000 German troops with 1,200 tanks and 700 aircraft launched their invasion of Greece from Bulgarian territory, bypassing the bulk of Greek troops near the Albanian border. The Metaxas defensive line was overrun, and small numbers of Australian, British and New Zealand troops could not stem the flow. By the end of the month, the Greek mainland was in German hands, and then German troops also landed on and captured Crete in May 1941. Of interest, next year will mark the 80th anniversary of Operation Marita, so Dragon has brought together a number of 1/35 scale figure sets that feature participants in that decisive campaign. This Dragon assortment features no fewer than six 1/35 scale figure sets depicting the Greek invasion, a campaign that has not received the publicity or attention that it perhaps deserves.
