What are RC models?
RC models are essentially model vehicles that can be controlled remotely. They are available in numerous different sizes and designs – racing cars, buggies and trucks are particularly popular. RC vehicles typically range between 1:10 and 1:36 scale, although they are also available in other sizes, including larger models that are closer to the size of the original.
How do RC vehicles work?
Essentially, RC vehicles are controlled via a transmitter in the remote control and a built-in receiver in the model. On a technical level, they work as follows: the position of the controls on the remote control is converted into a so-called PWM signal. This signal is then transmitted to the RC model over a radio frequency. The remote-controlled vehicle filters the control signals, detects them and sends the corresponding commands to the steering servo and speed controller, where they are converted into movements. The steering servo is responsible for steering movements, while the speed controller controls the speed and
direction of the motor. In short:
Position of controls > PWM signal > Control signals sent to steering servo and speed controller > Vehicle moves
The sensitivity of the controls depends on the RC model and the corresponding remote control. If both feature finely adjustable components, you can fine tune the steering and speed commands. Entry-level models with a push button remote control typically offer less flexibility.
Are remote-controlled vehicles suitable for children?
Most children are fascinated by RC models. However, whether remote-controlled vehicles are suitable will depend on the age of your child – controlling an RC vehicle requires fine motor skills, and therefore remote-controlled models are only suitable for young children under the supervision of an adult. By six years of age, most children have acquired the necessary fine motor skills to control RC models with simple controls. In terms of suitability and choosing the right model, parents are best placed to determine whether their child has the skills required to handle a remote-controlled vehicle.
What must I pay attention to when choosing an RC model?
